Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
To be successful in life, you must be literate. You must be able to read and comprehend different types of texts. As the school librarian, I play a key role in fostering this in every student in my school and to support my colleagues in the same endeavor. The students we teach need a lot of assistance with becoming fluent readers. Our school is a Title 1 school where over 90% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch due to the families low socioeconomic status.
Additionally, our school has approximately a 67% English as a Second Language population.
Many of our students have just left their home country and are coming to the US for the first time.
Most of the students are come to school from broken homes and with limited resources. All these factors play a part in the severely low reading levels of our students and their lack of confidence in their academic ability. Our students interact in class, are inquisitive, and want to learn. Many are frustrated with school due to their lack of reading ability. We are striving to create College and Career ready students and productive citizens.
My Project
Many of my students are hesitant to read because of their limited reading skills and lack of confidence. Books with hilarious characters, such as Elephant and Piggie, they can't resist picking up, even with their low level reading. These books are irresistable.
I am requesting Elephant and Piggie, Henry and Mudge, and Mr. Putter & Tabby.
The books' simple sentence structure and expressive illustrations offer students the chance to successfully work on their skills during reading in class and at home. These silly stories also have students reading the same book again and again which is great for reading practice!
Special Education, English as a Second Language, and Basic Skills Teachers often come to the library looking for beginning books to check out for their students for independent reading practice. The books in this project will go into the library for teachers and students to check out to practice reading strategies.
