My Students

I’ve been blessed with a teaching career surrounded by middle school students. Their energy and puppy-like awkwardness make for an exciting and interesting day that is always different from the next. In a sixth through eighth-grade middle school, my seventh-grade students are at a unique point in their academic career. They have a year of experience, yet another year still full of wonder, giving them the perfect mixture of confidence and curiosity.

As a seventh grade ELA teacher, my classroom is the melting pot of readers and writers.

My students come from different learning backgrounds and have many unique learning styles; however, they are all seeking adventure and looking to escape the ordinary day-to-day. My students are on the hunt for awesome ideas, friends, role models, and inspiration to make life (and school) fascinating!

My Project

The Arc of the Scythe series by Neal Shusterman has been by far the most wanted book in my class this year. Before school, during lunch, between classes, and after school, I will have students run up to me and say, "I cannot believe the ending! Did you see that coming?" These great discussions fill my heart to see reluctant or tired readers blaze through pages and actually spend time at home reading. I can barely keep copies of the book in my room, and many students are on waiting lists at the school and public library. Not to mention our classroom copies look like they were served as a snack for a hamster.

Our classroom would benefit from having new sets of The Arc of the Scythe series to keep students excited for reading.

In the spring, students will be reading and discussing topics related to Utopian and dystopian societies. While discussing the novel, The Giver, students will be forming their own reading groups and selecting their own dystopian novels to read together. To keep the excitement going, and help students anticipate our end-of-the-year book club, I would love to have a couple of sets of The Arc of the Scythe series available for students.

Using The Arc of the Scythe series, students will analyze how characters are affected by their environments and then look into their own lives and how their environment shapes who they are. Students will love to see the connections they have with the book and will be begging to read the whole series!
