My Students

Think back, back in time when you sat in a classroom and listened to your teacher talk and talk for hours. Well now fast forward to the 21st Century where educators are utilizing technology to enhance the learning environment but your child's classroom is stuck in a time warp.

I am a 5th grade teacher to a great group of students.

My school resides in a low-income area with minimal parent support. I am my students' parent, here to provide every opportunity for them to succeed. We cry, laugh, play and learn together while conquering life's most difficult subject, Math. I teach in an impoverished area in the inner city of Illinois. Our school is a Title I school which means that at least 90% of our students are at or below the poverty level. Many of our parents struggle to provide their children with the necessities of life and minimal wants. Many of the teachers go out their way to supply each student in their class with their daily schools supplies and resources. Our school is a Math and Science Specialty school, which puts great emphasis on these subjects. However we are missing out on the new innovative ways to educate students through technology.

My Project

Technology is everywhere. Cell phones, computers and video games are taking over the world. This craze impacts the way educators think and teach. I am competing with every nation to prepare my students for their world. The number of U.S.-educated people prepared to take on technologically challenging jobs is dwindling due to a stuffy education system, but tech tools are just what I need to turn my classroom around. An LCD projector would allow participation in the two-way learning process. Students would communicate and interact better through the opportunities presented with the use of audio-visual tools. I am no longer the center of attention as the dispenser of information, but rather playing the role of facilitator, setting project goals and providing guidelines and resources, moving from student to student or group to group, providing suggestions and support. I will be able to show educational videos, tutorials, and blogs which will enhance the learning environment.

The process of learning in the classroom can become significantly richer as students have access to new and different types of information.

The world is brought into the classroom without ever leaving the front door. My students will become more engaged in the lesson and participation will increase. No longer will I need to solicit participation, participation will come voluntarily. It is my job to provide my students with an education that prepares them for the 21st century.
