My Students

My students need to learn more about how the food the eat reaches their tables.

My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from one another.

They enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing their knowledge with each other. My students enjoy using their critical thinking skills to evaluate new information. I often integrate the arts into our lessons so my students can make personal connections to their learning and demonstrate what they know in creative ways.

My Project

In science we have a life cycles unit that focuses on plants and insects. To go along with this unit, I'm requesting the Kids Discover plants magazine. I'm also requesting books on ladybugs, bees, the fruits we eat, farming, & what archaeologists find when they dig for clues. These books will help students understand how food goes from a farm to our table. We'll learn about the important role insects play, about fruits we can eat, as well as about the soil & plants themselves. The illustrations in these nonfiction texts will allow my students the chance to visualize concepts that are often difficult to understand & develop a deeper understanding about plants & insects. With each story we read, students will record the new information they learned in their science journals. They will write down unanswered questions and collaborate with peers to find the answers. Each group will create a presentation for the class to present what they have learned.

This project will help my students become 21st Century Learners by implementing a strong foundation for inquiry by providing them with opportunities to enhance their community, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity skills.
