My Students

I am a teacher at an elementary school in Red Hook, Brooklyn. All of my students receive free school lunch. Next year I will be teaching a new "Farm to Table" class, which I am really excited about.

Since we are starting from scratch with this "Farm to Table" program, I am in need of some supplies to get this off the ground.

The "Farm to Table" class is a cluster class, so I will be seeing students of all ages, from pre-k through grade 5 on a daily basis. The main topics that I would like to cover throughout the school year are parts of a plant, life cycle of plants, cooking & eating healthy recipes, and environmental awareness and conservation. We would like to ban plastic bags throughout the building, as well as teach kids about the negative affects of sugar on their bodies. There are so many big topics that we could cover, the possibilities are endless!

My Project

I have requested some books for read aloud to coincide with lessons. The books cover topics such as food groups, growing an urban garden, cooking, keeping the Earth clean, and trying new foods. For the younger grades I have requested plush fruits and vegetables, as well as some food group toys and puppets. I know that the kids will enjoy these resources, and a cute puppet may encourage a child to try some broccoli when we prepare it in class. I am excited to get kids involved in learning more about growing food, and health and nutrition. Last year I ran a gardening club at the school, and I would often hear comments from kids like, "I love gardening! I have never done this before!" Kids were respectful of the garden setting, learning to not be afraid of worms, caterpillars, and other tiny creatures. I feel that these are experiences that every child should have, and I am thrilled to have that opportunity in the coming school year.

Our country is now in the midst of a movement of healthy eating & living, including knowing where our food comes from.

Kids today deserve to get a head start on learning how to take the best possible care of themselves, as well as the Earth. Our Earth depends on it!
