My Students

People often ask me why I commute so far away to teach when I could work in a much more affluent community closer to where I live. The simple answer is because I have never been a happier teacher than when I'm with my students. They make me smile, laugh, sing and dance, and challenge me every day.

There are five different primary languages in my homeroom this year.

The entire district receives free breakfast and lunch due to high poverty levels and there's no where else I'd rather be.

My Project

A few years ago, we received a grant for seven raised garden beds for our school. We were so excited and have been able to grow a great deal of food. The students love all aspects of our little farm, from planting, to watering, to harvesting. We sometimes will eat what we have grown and often send produce home. I would like to show the kids that there are so many more things for us to do with what we grow.

I would like to show them simple and healthy recipes that they can taste at school and try out at home with their families.

We are able to grow a great deal of produce and would like to increase the access of our students to tasting these foods. I plan to use the induction burner, pans, and utensils to teach safe cooking techniques and new recipes using tomatoes, carrots, beets, radishes, carrots, leafy greens, and everything else that we can grow in our garden. With these materials we will be able to have everything that we need in order to have small cooking demonstrations, taste tests, and be able to clean up afterwards.
