Help me give my students the opportunity to read this novel and raise the bar for what a quality Bronx public school education can look like!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For the first time ever, my 7th grade students will engage in a unit of study for reading fantasy. We have chosen the classic “The Golden Compass”.
My 7th-grade students are Bronxites living in one of the poorest congressional districts in the US.
Despite this, my students along with our school community have made the most significant growth in literacy in the past two years since our schools inception. This speaks to the capacity of our students and their ability to rise to the highest level of expectations.
My Project
With access to these books, students will for the first time get to take home and keep a book that they can read closely, annotate and think critically about...their own book!
Not only will students read and consider characters, themes and authors craft in this novel, they will also write their own fantasy stories after Pullman himself.
This unit will culminate in students engaging in gamification of the novel. Students will work in teams to create their own digital or board game based on the book. Students will share and play their games sign the Wild er s book community.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
