My Students

The first time I watched my own daughter who was a struggling reader pick up a Harry Potter book and literally devour it, I knew then that for some children fantasy is the way to hook them into reading. Usually I read aloud; this year I am challenging my students to do it in our reading groups.

The majority of my students are middle or lower middle class kids with hard working parents, who work in the mining or service industry.

They are good kids who enjoy learning but lack exposure to the world in a lot of ways. I try to expose them to a variety of things through reading and writing. We live in a small rural community in northern Nevada.

My Project

My students love the books I select for them to read every year in their reading groups. So far this year we have done an author study with Roald Dahl, and are just beginnning Historical fiction focusing on the Revolutionary War. For the most part I have been buying the books myself over the years, but this year I really want to add new books to my collection and I am feeling financially strapped. I want to expose them to some new authors that will excite them to read even more than they do right now. I feel that the key to success in learning anything is to be a pwerful reader throughout your life.

The books I have selected are from a range of authors with a variety of story lines all within the genre of fantasy fiction.

My students seem to enjoy when I read this type of story to them. The level of the books I have selected are at or above fifth grade level, and I believe that will challenge their reading skills and their thinking when it comes to discussing and writing about what they are reading. With the help of the donors I will be able to provide them with this experience.
