Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Worksheets are so 1999! To engage today's students, teachers have to get creative. Enter FOLDABLES! A foldable is a 3D, interactive graphic organizer that provides a creative format for student work that replaces worksheets with student-generated print. To get folding, we need paper!

I serve nearly 900 wonderful, squirrelly Pre-K - 4th grade students at a Title-1 elementary in an urban area of Texas.

Our population is a beautiful global blend of African-American, African, Latino, Southeast and Pacific Asian students, most of whom are classified as "high-risk" because over 80% of our students receive free lunch. In a community like ours, teachers have to work to overcome many of the issues that high-risk students bring to campus daily. Focusing our students can be a challenge, but they love creating foldables, and we make them all the time in the Science Lab.

My Project

Brian loves to draw, he'd do it all day in class if you'd let him. Maria is new to the country, and she is shy about her lack of language skills. Vy finishes her work in a flash, and always needs more to do. All of these students can display their interests and abilities while simultaneously learning an academic concept by completing a foldable. Foldables can be differentiated to meet the needs of different learners, and can work with illustrations, or just print, copied text or students' own words. It's amazing what a little tiny change to instruction can do to get students excited, and I saw that first hand when I bought a ream of "Astrobright" paper to make foldables with a 4th grade class. They loved the paper, and worked hard and carefully to turn it into gorgeous books about the water cycle. Teachers came to me begging to get the "cool paper" that we used in the lab, but I told them that unfortunately is was $15 for a package.

With your help today, I could turn a rare technicolor treat into a foldable reality for my students.

They loved using the "special" colored paper, and this helped them focus on learning about Science. As tools in my teaching arsenal go, this one is a no-brainer that all students love, and I would appreciate any help you could give us to make this happen in the Science Lab. Thanks for reading our little proposal and for supporting teachers like me on Donorschoose.org!
