Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The science lab can be a very messy place. On any given day, the lab benches might contain soil, pond water, preserved organisms, a compost bin or a variety of chemicals. My students create wonderful diagrams to help them experiment and discover, but they are often destroyed in the process.

I teach science to 135 brilliant, diverse, and challenging eighth graders in New York.

The students who attend our middle school live in the surrounding neighborhoods, which are unfortunately plagued by poverty, drug abuse, crime, and a high drop-out rate. Our team of dedicated teachers work tirelessly to help our students avoid these pitfalls by fostering their individual talents, developing their skills and preparing them to succeed in high school and beyond.

My Project

I am requesting a laminator machine and pouches, so that students can preserve their hard work and reference it in the future. Many of my students are English Language Learners, and therefore benefit from the use visual aids such as drawings, graphs, flowcharts and diagrams. I devote quite a bit of class time to allow them to create these references as learning aids, which will allow them to better organize and plan for the hands-on activities and experiments. One issue we constantly run into is that once they create these visual aids, they are frequently ruined at the lab bench. The ability to laminate this work for the students would permit them to use their references many times, without risk of destroying them.

This project will improve my student's ability to organize and plan experiments and projects.

It will assist them with literacy skills and provide them with confidence of having a reference to look back on when they are struggling. A laminator machine will allow my students to preserve their work, into which they have invested so much time and effort.
