My Students

I'm fortunate to work with about 1200 brilliant, elementary school students on a daily basis. We go to a large school in the Atlanta metro area. In all areas of the school day, we seek to teach citizenship, community, and moral values and help our students grow into caring people.

Though many of my students come from low-income​ households, they are innovative and creative, not letting boundaries stop them.

Music gives children an outlet to express emotion and ideas and grabs hold of their attention. Their eyes light up when they can take music making into their own hands and create something absolutely new.

My Project

Our music room floor is covered by industrial tile which makes every sound a little louder, sitting a littler harder, and the space a little colder. Elementary school students often sit, crawl, and move around on the floor and the hard tile doesn't make that process very fun. As we dance throughout the room kids often trip on the patchwork of old rugs that we use to make the room just a bit more comfortable.

Covering the floor in these soft tiles will give kids a comfortable place to sit, roll, crawl, and dance to the music.

The colorful tiles will help to naturally dampen the sounds that we make on instruments and can also be arranged into different shapes to use for seating charts. They're easy to clean and can be vacuumed over, swept, or mopped easily. Most of all, they would help to create an inviting atmosphere and calm place for us to explore and create new music!
