Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is the first school experience for many of my students. Many started the school year lacking the fine motor skills needed for writing and drawing. Many have weak muscle movements and lack coordination in their hands and fingers needed for feeding, opening utensils, zipping, and buttoning. My students are at different levels in their fine motor development and while most are developing age-appropriately, some do have fine motor delays.

My Project

Handwriting requires the ability to distinguish certain shapes and figures, and to translate those distinct mental images into consistent physical motions in hands. It requires the ability to hold a writing instrument in an effective way. It requires the writer to consistently follow certain well-defined, pre-prescribed motions.

I plan to slowly introduce materials during small group instruction. Once my students are familiar with the materials, they will be encouraged to use them independently during choice time activities throughout the day.

My Project

Most of our students did not get the opportunity of attending a regular preschool due to the pandemic. Those who did attended virtually and in person from April to June. Most of the children receive the opportunity to practice fine motor skills in preschool while they were 3 years old. These materials will help all of our children build fine motor strength.

Kids need fine motor strength in order to write, eat, zip and button.

These materials and manipulatives will help my students develop fine motor skills. The skills they will gain by using these materials will help them with self-help skills which they will use all of their lives.
