About My Students

The book club consists of students of all grade levels who are interested in sharing their love of reading with other students. These students include a diverse group of highly-motivated readers. They meet weekly to plan what books they will read, organize fundraisers and literacy events, and to talk about books! Our school is a Title 1 school with the majority of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. While they love books and libraries, buying 10 books a year for book club is not possible for all members.

Through this project, students learn leadership and organization. They must organize a meeting for the group to discuss possible selections, find a way to fairly come to a decision for a book to request, and then write the proposal for the project.

Academic skills include critical reading, argumentation as they discuss the book and support their answers with evidence from the book, Winter Falls, requested in this proposal, and listening as they hear the interpretations of others in the group, even they are different than their own.

In Their Own Words

It’s my final year as the Literature Club president and I want this year to be unlike the last! For this to happen, we would need to receive funding so we can purchase our first book of the year, Winter Falls by Nicole Maggi. A perfect way to start the year off with a bang is a magical fantasy book! We all fantasize about traveling to worlds unknown and books are the perfect getaway! This club has been such a special outlet for me and a safe space as well, I want to share that with the new and returning members.

My Co-President and I would be so thankful if we were sponsored. We want to lead discussions about the book with our peers every Wednesday so we can work on skills that we’ll need in the future. We encourage public speaking and looking between the lines. We want to foster an environment where everyone can share their own opinion without fear of reproach.

Literature Club has been such an inspiring place. So many different people meet in our wonderful library and we’ve found a home within each other. Discussing the various symbols and imagery within books just brings us even closer. This is a place for people to bond over good literature. Cliques don’t matter. Labels don’t matter. We are free from society's standards of us in that library. Of course I would want to preserve that for the next generation. With your help, we can preserve this club and this warm environment. It’ll mean so much to us, present and future.
