Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My student's are eager to learn. Last Friday was warm especially on the third floor with no air-conditioning. My students were on track working hard. Just before the end of school, an adult entered the room, my students looked up, said hello and went right back to work!

My students are from stable immigrant families.

They live in a working class neighborhood. Most families speak Spanish at home. My students are becoming bilingual and bi-literate. As they master English, we take advantage of their knowledge in Spanish in order to keep them at grade level and allow them to develop strong English language skills. Studies show that the best way to do this is to read at grade level in their native language.

My Project

We are requesting for our class library a broad range of books in Spanish including Spanish Heritage, Nonfiction, Notable Authors, and Fiction, Voces en el parque/Voices in the Park, Cuales son los secretos de las plantas? Adaptacion y Superv, Historia de una semilla, and Las patas del flamenco/The Flamingo''s Legs. Currently we are studying the elements of different genres of fiction. The class as a whole analyzes the a story identifying character, setting, beginning, middle and end and other components. Next they choose a book of their own and look for similar characteristics. Later in the school year we will analyze non-fiction.

Having a broad selection of age appropriate books in our in-class library, makes it possible to allow the children to select books that grab their attention as we explore the writing process.
