My class is 80% boys. This 3rd grade class is predominantly a low-income minority population. We are a full inclusion class. I teach all subjects, but the subject my students thrive in most, is creative writing!

With limited rich vocabulary, and a premature knowledge of the world around them, it's a challenge to develop my 3d grade readers. I feel one of the best ways to develop reading skills is through writing. Thus, my students are writing within and across the curriculum, and they LOVE it!

Using the 5 step writing process, my students will learn about Famous Americans. Their published reports will be posted on their display boards along with pictures, drawings, and any other information of interest that they choose. After all display boards are complete, students will present their learnings with each other. This project will enhance reading, writing, and oral presentation skills. In addition, students will learn about important thinkers from American history, and be inspired to be independent thinkers themselves.

Most of my students cannot afford to buy a twelve dollar display board. Your help will give them a chance to think, write, read, and put it all together by creating an eye-catching display. By developing vocabulary and learning about famous Americans from all over the country, you can help these children become more independent thinkers.
