My Students

The students that I support are all rock stars in the making! They range in grade level from kindergarten to fifth, and have infinite potential, with a constant thirst for knowledge and structure. Whether in or out of the class room, they can always be found stretching themselves to new limits.

While extremely gifted and intelligent, I often find that many of my students happen to be lacking in other areas that most of us take for granted like housing and food security, clean clothing, and access to technology; I see a little piece of myself in each of these children, and I want to make sure that they have all of the necessary resources and support that they need to thrive, especially as we attempt to navigate through this global pandemic together.

My Project

The flexibility that is unlocked by the wireless capability of a Mac Book laptop is astounding, and the idea of not being tied down by wires and the ability to take control of your tasks on your own terms can be very empowering. This is exactly what we want to do for our families: empower and support.

We are a Title I school with limited resources for both students, their families, and in some cases, even staff.

Just as many others have probably experienced or observed, due to Covid-19 technology distribution by both the DOE as well as the school’s own reserve, there is a shortage of devices. The computers that we have available in our Family Empowerment Zone (a safe space in our school for the students and families) are outdated as well as limited in availability, while some are not functional at all.

This is why securing this laptop would be so meaningful and beneficial to us. Parents would be able to come in and register their children virtually without any issues or get assistance with how to access their child’s Google Classroom, communicate with teachers and staff. Students could find after school programs or tutoring. Other uses include scouring the web for partnerships that would help to fortify our community, and resources that would benefit our families including, but not limited to financial assistance, food assistance, transportation, and legal assistance. Students would be able to use this laptop to complete activities and play educational games to sharpen skills.

With the understanding that this laptop would require a hefty amount of storage space, given the amount of traffic and use it would be subject to, the external hard drive and insurance are crucial.
