This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school day is from 7am-5pm. While this strengthens academic growth, it also minimizes family time for most families. The majority of our parents are single parents, most of which work multiple jobs, which minimizes parent/child interaction. Parental involvement is unquestionably important.
Our students are primarily low income African- American students who reside in the St.
Louis City area. Our charter school works hard to bring students who are typically two grade levels below the standard closer to their grade level or above proficient. The majority of our students are from single family households, and more than 88% of our population receives free or reduced lunch. The majority of our students are considered at-risk that attend our public school. Many of our parents work either two jobs or work full-time and attend school part-time to increase their income in their household.
My Project
This year our school wants to strengthen the student and family connection through positive interaction and engagement. We plan to do this through our three family fun nights that will include: a game night, a movie night, and a book club/reading night. All of these special events will help encourage families to work together climbing the mountain to college. It has a main purpose connect our students and parents into our "team and family" theme to inspire support and success among our student population. Teachers and Administrators will have the opportunity to interact with families during this process to build positive and sustainable relationships within the school culture. We want our students to become engaged and inspired to learn with their parents. Parents encourage their children to succeed in their academic endeavors and our hope is that our supportive fun nights will allow students to connect more to their dreams from parental involvement increasing.
The items we are requesting include Microsoft office software for two of our computers to develop flyers and banners regarding the event, new board games for families to use during our game nights, supplies to do arts and crafts and/or activities with families, and healthy snacks to have available for our students, parents and teachers who attend our school-wide events.
Your donation will help students and families unite around learning as fun in the educational setting.
