This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is a very diverse population where about thirty percent of the student body is African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic. All students are bused to school. All the students are eligible for free lunch. I have been a science teacher for over twenty years. I came to our school to teach STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering Art, and Math), and finally, I teach beyond the school district curriculum.
It seems like the only games kids play these days are on an electronic device. Students don't have to necessarily actual talk to anyone, it's all through text messages on the computer or their phone. With the current pandemic, supporting the emotional wellbeing and mental health of students is more important than ever. My goal is to teach my students how to play board games and help them learn how to work cooperatively with each other face to face.
These games will also help students think critically and work on problem solving skills, all which help students do better in their academic subjects.
In my school, I work with a selected number of students during advisory on their math , reading scores and their social emotional development or learning (SEL) . This requires a variety of diverse school materials for individual and group sessions. Therefore, this project requests new, SEL games/activities that are age appropriate for our middle school population in order to best support their mental health and emotional wellbeing.
These SEL games/activities will be enthusiastically utilized by my students. These games will not only help teach my students new concepts to help support their social and emotional health, but it will continue to motivate and excite my students to thrive in the school and continue to become the best versions of themselves! We hope you will help support this project. Thank you for your support.
