My Students

I teach in a diverse, Title I school in a suburb of Washington, DC. Preschool is often the children's first time being away from their parents, so I strive to make it a fun and engaging environment. This event will be for all the children who attend preschool programs at my school and their families.

Our preschool classes include two, three, four and five-year-olds from a variety of backgrounds.

We have several classes for children with disabilities and prekindergarten classes for children that face potential risk-factors. Our students come from culturally and linguistically diverse families and many face socio-economic challenges.

My Project

Our preschool team is planning to host a series of family events in the coming school year. We would like to help families discover fun and developmentally appropriate activities to do at home that don't involve screens. Young children benefit from high quality materials and interactions with their families. This event will focus on developmentally appropriate art. We will have multiple activity stations for the children to participate in, including making a group mural, using recycled materials to make art, and more.

Our young students love to paint, draw, glue, and sculpt at school, so having materials to use at home will be very exciting for them.

Each child will get to take home a bag of high-quality art materials at the end of the evening, so they can continue to make art at home! The bags will include watercolor sets, paintbrushes, glue sticks, liquid glue, a variety of paper and collage materials, and more! My colleagues and I are working to ensure each child gets a full kit of basic art supplies for painting, collage, and drawing. We will also include information for parents about how to talk about art and the importance of process art. The children will benefit from having real their own sets of paints to experiment with mixing colors and more! Not only will the art supplies encourage creativity, making art can also help develop fine motor skills and communication.
