Parents are our biggest resource in supporting my students’ growth in the classroom. This is the first step of many to invite our newcomer families as co-collaborators in their child’s classroom instruction. An added bonus is the therapeutic effects of creating art in community, benefitting both child and adult.
Crafting together as a family is an activity that can provide the socio-emotional benefits of feeling safe and loved.
As well as building community alongside their family and peers cultivating the nourishing environment needed for learning.
One such project such as making our own crayons utilizing natural beeswax, gives students the insight on how a common object we use daily is made and how we can use natural materials to do so. We move from consumers to creators and also taking on the responsibility of take extra care of what we make.
Students and families will also be creating dolls and puppets for playtime utilizing fabric, felt and yarn. These artifacts will be used in the classroom to support imaginary play, storytelling and socio-emotional growth with a culturally responsive lens. Many of our students have had to leave all of their belongings behind, including toys. These are extra special having been made alongside family and community members. To support our story and playtime, we will use our new carpet to make this a cozy and fun space.
