My Students

It's always a joy to see my students on their first trip to our classroom library in order to choose a book for independent reading. They're always careful, curious, and, most of all, excited to see what new books await them.

In our Brooklyn middle school, a diverse group of students from many neighborhoods come together.

They are different in many ways - race, economic background, and ability are just a few. They are all unique, but the one common thing they share is that they all love to read.

My Project

Beginning the year with some newly published books is always a great way to start. My students are always surprised at how current our classroom library is, and that is thanks to projects like this one. Each year, I want my students to be able to choose the best books for themselves, and having a wide variety of books is the best way to do this. I have chosen a number of titles across genres and reading levels, including recent, compelling nonfiction titles that I hope will encourage students who normally only read fiction to open themselves up to something new. Students who are interested in historical fiction can check out Lincoln's Grave Robbers. Those captivated by the women's World Cup this summer can continue with that interest by reading Solo: A Memoir of Hope. A wide range of independent reading books is important, and this project will help keep our classroom library diverse.

You will help support our public school as we enter another year of budget cuts.

My students will be impacted by this project because they will have the opportunity to read books that have been recently published, and the diverse selection will help to keep everyone reading. From haunting novels in verse, like Caminar and Skyscraping, to diverse collections, like Beyond Magenta and I Hate Myselfie, there's something for everyone.
