My Project

A key component of the middle school Montessori curriculum is to establish and maintain a student ran micro-economy. Students will run various events throughout the school year, like Fall Fest, Spring Fling, bake sales, and spaghetti lunches. Owning all the equipment and supplies they need will cut down on their rental costs so more of their fundraising dollars goes toward their end-of-year trips. Our students come from twenty-six zip codes around Baltimore City and they are as diverse as our city is, making a community that is 66% African American, 27% White, 3% Hispanic/Latinx, 4% Asian or more than one race; approximately 45% come from families considered low-income. A micro-economy is an engaging hands-on way to teach our students financial literacy.

We wish to create a program that will teach the full spectrum of a business plan with a goal of financing their end of year community events.

This will involve creating a budget, refining skills needed for creating their products and events, assigning jobs, marketing their items and events, and finally assessing its effectiveness with simple costs vs. income accounting.

Students will use carnival games for their Fall Fest and Spring Fling, both of which are a highlight of our school community. A karaoke machine is a fun way to host a dance competition, fall theme photo backdrops are fun for our tweens and our elementary students, and having coveted prizes makes their games even more fun.
