My Students

For six years the library at our school was shuttered due to severe budget cuts. Now, three years after its re-opening, students are rushing in on their breaks, eager to get books. They are hurrying to see if a good book has been returned because there just aren't enough of those to go around.

My students attend a Title 1, inner-city Los Angeles middle school with 680 students, 99% of whom are minorities.

Ninety-one percent of the student body qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches. Nearly a quarter of the students are learning English.

Reading scores are low at our school, but we are on a mission to change that, by giving every kid a chance to find that "one good book" that will hook him or her on reading.

My Project

Getting students to read books in the age of video games and YouTube is a real challenge. But studies show students will read independently when they have access to high-interest books that they can self-select.

Our goal is to add the first 15 books of the Fairy Tail manga series to the school library collection.

In a survey of all sixth and seventh grade student interests, this was the most requested series.

These books will be available to all students in the school. They can check the books out for Silent Sustained Reading time during Homeroom or English class and for their own pleasure reading at home. These books will support our efforts to promote a love of reading in all of our students.
