Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Once upon a time, there was a classroom full of wonderful students without access to the world of fairy tales and folk tales. This is a tragedy, as folklore is known to develop a student's love of stories and reading!

Every year that I have been teaching, the part of the day when students are most engaged, is when I read aloud to them.

My students have an insatiable desire to read. I teach at an urban school in Illinois, in a community where 95% of our students receive free lunch. All of my students are African-American and Latino. The Latino population has been growing in the community, and therefore we get more and more ESL students each year. My students have very diverse language needs in the classroom. Even though I have a diverse group of learners, they all suffer from a lack of literacy-rich homes. Every year I talk to my students about reading at home and taking trips to the library, and every year I am astounded how little they are encouraged to read at home.

My Project

Reading fairy tales and folk tales to young children is so important because most, if not all folklore deals with real life issues, the struggle between good and evil, and the good being rewarded and the bad being punished. Folklore helps students relate their real life experiences to characters and situations in the stories. Of course, the stories are fun and interesting as well! Having fairy tales and folk tales in my classroom would enable me to create thematic units of study for my students. I would like my students to study the different versions of stories like: The Gingerbread Man, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and The Three Little Pigs. Additionally, I want my students to study folklore written by different cultures. For example, groups of students could become experts on folklore that comes from Native Americans or from China. In this way, students will have a window into other cultures to expand their schema on the world and the people living in it.

This project will make such a difference for my students!

Through using these books, my goal is to develop three things. First, I want my students to love reading! Second, I want my students to learn about reading strategies and literary elements by using books they enjoy. And last, I want my students to learn about the amazing cultures that have passed down these incredible stories that have stood the test of time. I hope you will help me accomplish these goals!
