My Project

Our school is multilingual. There are over 4,000 students and over half of them speak a language other than English at home! We started a multilingual club last year that meets every week. Students organize around a topic, and then pair up into groups of Spanish and English speakers. Native Spanish speakers practice their English with native English speakers, and vice-versa.

Help give our multilingual club an iPad and camera to record and vlog our linguistic journey, and to communicate with friends and families in their native Spanish!

When we started the club, we were hesitant to record ourselves. But many of our students enjoyed making videos of each other practicing the language. From there, we thought it would be enriching to record a vlog each meeting and post to our Instagram page.

The Sony vlogging camera records at a high quality with good sound, so we don't need a microphone or tripod. We can just record, post to our Instagram, and make the recordings into a video at the end of the year.

The iPad will allow us to edit the videos. Several of our students are into video editing and will enjoy the task of editing and posting. iPad editing is much better than trying to do it on a different phone each time.

But more importantly, this generation iPad features Center Stage, with is an enhancement to FaceTime that tracks the speaker and zooms in on whoever is speaking. This will allow us to have students FaceTime with their relatives at home. Imagine a class filled with native English speakers conversing with native Spanish speakers in the same class but also via FaceTime with their family in Bolivia. A truly immersive experience like this is unparalleled!
