Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On the success of my last DonorsChoose project "Being Bold and Breaking the Mold", my students want to take things to the next level. From casting hands, now they want to learn to cast faces. They are even willing to stay after school to learn. Let's keep them excited to learn!

Our school serves an urban economically depressed area grades 6 - 12, with 100% of students qualifying for the free lunch program.

We have a large population of English language learners, students with special needs, students living in temporary housing, and students with histories of interrupted education. Despite all the obstacles our students face, we also have some of the most creative and caring students you might ever want to meet. Our school is under funded, but thanks to DonorsChoose and the generosity of strangers who care, our students are getting the chance to get a good education that will open doors, and give them a chance at a bright future.

My Project

Just a short time ago I had a project funded on DonorsChoose, called "Being Bold and Breaking the Mold" It was a reaction to all the standardized testing. I thought the kids could use a way to get back to individuality, so they learned how to make molds and cast their own hand in plaster. They then worked the dry plaster, modifying it, making it more unique, and letting their creativity go wild. Their engagement was beyond anything I had hoped for. Several of the High School students have gotten so into this process, they have asked to take it to the next level, and want to learn how to cast a face. I explained it would take longer than the 45 minute periods we have, and their response was, "we don't mind staying after school to learn" So I'm donating my time to teach them, and asking for you to help us out by donating a few materials. My students need alginate (skin safe), and plaster gauze so they can learn to cast a person's face.

The greatest side effect of this project has been how the students have researched the applications of mold making.

They have discovered how it's used in careers like industrial design, prosthesis design, crime scene investigations, dental technicians, special effects and costume design, prototyping, and more. Even more exciting has been how they have been able to connect this to the developments going on in the world of 3D imaging which itself, can be viewed as another process of casting.
