This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like when you realized you could pick up a book and read it? Well my second graders are all SO close to that moment, but need your help!

Our students are second graders at a charter school in New York City.

While our school is not brand new, we are still in the process of growing and changing. We have 24 students in our class and many of them receive free breakfast and lunch each day. Many of our students come from dual language homes and it is vital that they receive many phonics language based activities throughout their school day.

My Project

Our students are taught phonics using a multi-sensory approach. That means we don't just hand our students a pencil and paper and expect them to learn the different sounds found in our alphabet. This means we use a variety of materials so that they can feel, see, touch, and in some cases even taste the different sounds our alphabet makes. With these phonics centers and activities our students will be able to see the different parts of words separated to help them focus on a particular blend or vowel sound we are learning.

Help our students develop the skills and confidence to pick up ANY book they want.

Phonics games provide a fun way to show students that reading is fun. Giving them this will allow them to unlock the magical world of books!
