Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Located in an urban, high-need community of Florida, I am a 5th Grade Reading and Language Arts teacher to approximately 40 students. Within our school, students are homogeneously grouped based on previous performance on our state assessment. By the standards put forth by our district and state, my students are classified as "underachieving", "working below grade level", and "at risk". Many are identified as learning disabled, other health impaired, or intellectually disabled.

Sadly, reading has become a road-block for many of my students after years of perceived failure in an educational world focused so much on high stakes testing. It is my job and personal mission to help them overcome these barriers by helping them to build confidence by building their fluency and reading comprehension skills. It is my belief that these students CAN achieve; they might just need a different approach at getting there.

This project will provide our class with materials targeted towards increasing students' fluency skills. Personal CD players will allow students to listen and read along to audio books. The audio support especially benefits my most struggling readers who are not yet independent readers. Student timers are needed for timed quick reads which show students the number of words read per minute. This data can be recorded on the teacher assessment book in order to ensure that students are making increases and gains in the area of fluency. Finally, the intermediate reading trackers help students stay focused on the sentences they are reading.

Imagine what it must feel like, year after year, failing to make grade level standards in Reading. Knowing that you struggle with reading. Feeling embarrassed trying to sound out words. Becoming frustrated after even the first sentence of a book. No child should have to feel that way. So please help us by providing us with fun, fabulous, ways to become fluent readers!
