My Students

Ask anyone what they disliked most in math, and you will hear a resounding, "FRACTIONS!" The reason for this fear and loathing is a lack of understanding of how fractions work. Well, I think it's about time students starting having fun with fractions!

My students come from a low income, semi-rural area.

Many of them rarely have exposure to experiences outside of our town. However, they are curious and creative, and they eagerly explore new ideas in the classroom. Our school consists of nine 4th grade and eight 5th grade classes with 26 students per classroom. Our teachers work well together and openly share ideas and materials to benefit our students. The principal and school district help as much as they can, but there simply aren't enough manipulative materials to go around. We currently have 2 class sets of linking cubes and fraction tiles, and only 1 class set of fraction circles for the entire school.

My Project

This year I have been incorporating more hands-on activities to allow the students to collaborate with each other and explore concepts. Rather than just listen to me tell them how to work a problem, I want my students to internalize how and why mathematics works. It is a learning shift for all of us, but I have already seen the benefits in the way my students work with each other and how they problem solve. With the fraction tiles, fraction circles, and linking cubes, my students will be better able to explore equivalent fractions in linear and set models. They will also be able to utilize the manipulative materials to aid in visualizing adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators. By having these materials readily available, the students will be able to pull them out whenever they need to visualize the fractions, explain to a peer, or even check their work.

By helping provide the fraction tiles, fraction circles, and linking cubes to my classroom, you will be helping benefit my students in many ways.

They will be able to manipulate and visualize the fractions, their collaborative skills will improve, they will better internalize the concepts, and they will be eager to work on the activities. Also, I will be able to share the manipulatives with other teachers. Don't let another generation grow up hating fractions!
