Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a First Grade teacher In a Title 1 Elementary School. My classroom contains 18 academically and economically diverse students. More than 50% of my class speaks a language other than English. 75% of my students live in small apartments or trailer homes which does not allow for space to explore or store learning materials. I love teaching these children and want to give them every experience possible. My classroom comes from all languages and walks of life and they deserve every opportunity.

I love and want to feed my students hunger for learning as well as help each child reach their potential.

my second full year of teaching , I don't have as many supplies or funds available for enhance student learning. The materials needed most in my classroom are math manipulatives and everyday non-consumable school supplies. These manipulatives include pattern blocks, and wipe off sleeves for daily practice. These supplies will be used by both student and teacher.

My Project

These requested materials will make a BIG difference in my classroom and in student understanding. My students learn best when they have both a visual and hands-on/concrete representation of math concepts being taught. Students must first master solving problems visually and concretely before they can think abstractly. The magnetic pattern blocks, base ten set and library of math manipulatives will give my students the hands-on experience helpful for adding and subtracting, number sense, and give them practice in writing and creating number equations. These materials will also provide my students more opportunities and variety in their learning including independent practice of math concepts. The reusable number lines and write and wipe pockets will give my students opportunities to master math problems while being less wasteful (I.e. not use so many trees in the form of paper). These materials will help me as a teacher to informally assess student learning.

The donated materials requested will lead the way to small group and partner practice within our classroom.

All of these materials will enhance student learning and concept mastery. Variety is the spice of life, including in our learning and engagement. As a teacher, I am very excited at the prospect of seeing my students happily engaged in their learning.
