My Students

Welcome to the eye opening world of my 1st Grade students! It is a fun and exhilarating room filled with 19 students who walk in each morning with their eyes bright with excitement and wonder as they ponder what adventure awaits them today! First grade is a year filled with all kinds of new feats! Feats of learning to read, learning to add and subtract, to become scientists, and see how they are a small but mighty part of the world around them!

Imaginations and enthusiasm soar as we explore new ideas, new concepts, and begin to conquer the mystery of the world around us!

These are 6 year old students who come alive at the prospect of using popsicle sticks and glue! They thrill at the chance to run, play, and go on great learning adventures together! They work hard at trying to figure out what all of these letters mean when they are grouped together so they can unravel the mystery of reading. This is a class of boys and girls who are brave, courageous, who are learning that it's okay to make mistakes, and to always do their best! They are truly full of wonder and potential!

My Project

I have selected items for my students that focus on the many different ways that children learn. Specifically, hands-on activities that will deepen their understanding because they will be able to manipulate letters and make words that will help put the pieces together in the big puzzle of reading.

I have carefully chosen items that they will use to make connections in their brains as they use their hands and minds together.

It has been proven repeatedly that children learn best by "doing" and not with paper and pencil. My project also has items that my students will use to collaborate as group to build with ramps, balls, and building blocks. They not only learn about physics but about how to share, work together, and accomplish a common goal. I wish I could share the swell of anticipation and fun as students curl up on cushions to read a book, move counters on a ten frame, and especially create new words with magnetic letters rather than pencil and paper!

As my own new adventure at a new school and a new grade begins, I opted for items that were tried and true as my previous classes had these items and I know that these items will make a phenomenal difference in my students learning progression! What a wondrous gift of learning to share with my students!
