Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a school-based occupational therapist in Miami, FL, I work with students who required a wide array of intervention. At my school, I primarily work with students diagnosed on the Autism spectrum (ASD) and who have emotional disabilities. My students primarily struggle with improving their fine motor and visual perceptual abilities that are necessary for not only overall development, but for improving school success and participation. This school year, my school is creating a sensory classroom for these students to have a safe space to decompress in a judgement free, sensory-friendly environment. I am looking to supplement this room with fine motor and visual perceptual tools to further compliment the space.

Improving my student's fine motor and visual perceptual skills will improve their independence with school-based occupations, leading to improved confidence, motivation, and participation throughout the school day.

My students are hard working, fun loving individuals who work hard and do their best everyday.

My Project

Throughout my experience as an OT, children expand their horizons though play. This project serves to improve students' fine motor and visual perceptual abilities via play, specifically, games and puzzles.

These items will afford my students the opportunity to improve their fine motor and visual perceptual skills, as well as promote socialization, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.

Specifically, sorting games such as the fruit sorter and muffin tin sorter will allow my children to expand on their manual dexterity abilities that will promote not only school success, but carry over to daily living skills success. Fine motor coordination will be expanded via block and assembly tasks. Graded control can be reinforced via games like fishing and Jenga. Bilateral skills can be improved via games such as Bop IT. Eye-hand coordination and socialization will be addressed via fun board games, such as Perfection, Monopoly, and Rummikub.

These items also afford my students the ability to improve their visual perceptual functioning. The interlocking puzzles, along with Pixie Cubes, Connect 4, and iSpy Board Game, will improve my students' visual scanning, figure ground, and visual memory.
