My Students

My sewing class begins with a flurry of excitement as students gather their materials and begin sewing. They have created multiple projects in this class: pillows, purses, ponchos and bags. Two years ago they took first place in the district art exhibit with a collaborative batik banner installation.

My students are from all over the world.

Many have come as refugees from countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East Our school is a magnet for the newly arriving refugee students in our city. We specialize in English language acquisition while providing a rich educational environment that includes the arts. They are inspired and excited to learn all the possible ways to create art. Art gives my students to express things they have no words for. They are proud to show off their artworks to both peers and faculty at our school. The opportunity to learn to sew has given many the idea of developing a lifelong hobby, or maybe even a career in the fashion industry.

My Project

My students will use the fabrics, markers, and silk screening kit to create a collaborative fabric art installation. We will decide on a theme as a group and use the techniques we have learned to draw, print, sew, paint and put together a unique fiber art creation for permanent display at the school. We will also submit the artwork into the district art exhibit. They will apply the creativity techniques taught in class with issues of personal interest to develop a plan for their creation, then collaborate as a group to complete the plan, taking into consideration the different skills and abilities of each class member.

When my students learn new skills and techniques they feel a great sense of pride.

Creating a project as a group gives them a sense of belonging. When an artwork is displayed at the school the students feel important and valued. Participating in a district art competition is another source of pride for my students. These donations will give my students the opportunity to experiment and create with materials they would otherwise have no access to.
