This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in school for almost seven hours a day during a regular day. So many of them are new to the country and speak minimal, if any, English. For the majority of that time, they are seated, working on an electronic device. I provide opportunities for them to stay after school for two hours a day. They enjoy creating with their hands and minds, on paper and with supplies, instead of always being on something that needs charging. Sometimes, they stay because their parents work and are not home when they get home, but most stay because they love the comfortable environment I provide for them to acquire English! The students eat lunch early and to keep their energy up, they can enjoy healthy snacks in my after-school sessions.

All my students have stories they want to share, so creating a timeline puts them up-to-date; we will have them springboard from their timelines to the creation a vision/dream board for their future lives, lives they were granted here in the United States.

My students will learn English by using the language of sequencing and transitioning, academic vocabulary they can carry across disciplines during the regular school day. They will also learn the proper syntax and vocabulary while creating their visions and dreams. This will helps them comprehend and apply the skills involved with academic language to be successful both in and out of school!
