"Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it’s not all mixed up."--A.A. Milne (creator of Winnie-the-Pooh)
My 5th grade students face many challenges--from keeping track of their materials for class to overcoming difficult home situations. I teach reading, language arts, and American history to 5th graders at an inner-city middle school. Most of my students have unstable home situations and are considered "high-need".
In learning to adjust to switching classes, many students have difficulty keeping track of their materials (I always say that "Pencils are worth the price of gold around here!"). My students need help with organizational and problem solving skills, and we work on these things daily. If students are unable to overcome the obstacles of not having proper materials, they will be unable to succeed academically.
To help my students practice organizational skills, I would like to provide them with a more organized classroom environment. We often complete student-directed projects that the children work on independently. They need a way to access their supplies easily, and I need a way to manage the materials. Therefore, we need 2 drawer sets, 25 pencil boxes, table caddies, and a paper storage shelf.
Right now, our classroom represents a picture of chaos, with inaccessible materials spread throughout the room. You will help create a calmer classroom environment for my students and allow them to practice invaluable organizational skills.
