Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading saved my life. I believe that this could be true for you too, and I believe that it could be true for my students.

My students are bright, curious, and interested in the world.

They attend a small public school in one of the country's poorest congressional districts, and I believe that this helps drive them. They take full advantage of every opportunity given to them. I am honored to be their teacher as there is no greater pleasure than working with the students that I have the privilege of working with every single day.

My Project

Most of my students are avid readers. However, there are reluctant readers in the bunch; one of my jobs is to inspire them to develop a passion for literature. It is a job that I take very seriously. This year I have the honor of teaching an AP class. I need a wide range of books that will challenge and encourage all of my students. The books that I have chosen are some of the books that helped make me who I am today and are books with characters and journeys that I believe my students can relate to and will learn from. Books give us power. They give us power to escape from our lives, to learn about ourselves, and to envision a future for ourselves that no one else can interfere with. These books will give them access to that power.

I believe that every student needs to understand how important his or her voice is.

Reading and engaging with dynamic characters is a wonderful way for anyone to realize his or her worth. I know that the books I have chosen will inspire my students to keep working hard, to dream big, and to believe in themselves. Most importantly, they will show them that reading can be fun and will inspire them to make it a life long hobby.
