Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 3rd grade classroom is filled with curious, loving and kind students. My classroom community consists of students with diverse needs and personalities. The students are sweet and fun loving and need to be given the opportunity to experience how engaging the classroom can really be!
The majority of my students come from low-income, non-English speaking families.
Several of these students also have special needs. Regardless, they love being part of the classroom community. They show an eagerness to learn about the world around them and are excited to learn about current events and science. Scholastic News would be the perfect resource for our classroom.
My Project
I'm posting a project requesting twenty-eight subscriptions of Scholastic News magazine and Science Spin. I plan on using these resources in a variety of ways including shared reading, classroom discussions, curriculum enrichment projects, and reading comprehension skills. Each week, students will each have their individual copies of the text to read and mark up. Finding appropriate non-fiction texts can be difficult for students. The kid friendly, colorful text features and unique photographs in Scholastic News visually pulls the students into the magazine. The age appropriate language allows students to read and understand the material, making it the perfect non-fiction resource.
Scholastic News magazines cover a variety of topics.
By reading these non-fiction magazines on a weekly basis, they will be exposed to diverse experiences and conversations. This primary source will keep students up-to-date on current social and science events, but will also help them explore the wonders of reading non-fiction texts.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
