Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The global diversity of my students creates a culturally rich group of English Language Learners (ELLs). Our school has the fortune of having over six different languages spoken by ELL students. My school is in a disadvantaged neighborhood and is classified as a Title 1 school where all students are eligible for free lunch, with a student body that consists of 98% minorities.
For a few years our ELLs oscillated around 17%; but this year the ELL population jumped to 27% by December; needless to say, I am in desperate need of extra furniture and supplies that the school cannot afford.
Due to our school’s recent influx of new immigrant students, I had to create a schedule to accommodate my new students; one of the ways is bringing g them to other classes where I co-teach. However, there’s not enough desks or chairs to accommodate 5-8 extra students, and the chairs & supplies will help the visitors feel welcome and ready to participate, and not have to carry their chairs from one classroom to another.
My students come to English as a New Language (ENL, or ESL) to learn how to speak, read and write English to transition into a regular all-English classroom. They come with a positive, respectful attitude and hard work ethic. Funds are next to non-existent for school furniture, and chairs in the classrooms they visit to attend ENL classes with me are essential to support their learning goals and receive their mandated ENL services. I am looking for generous donors to help us have a better learning experience in our ENL classroom with these essential items to learn and be comfortable.
