My Students

Reader's and Writer's Workshop is changing the way we think, talk and write about texts. My students are being challenged with this new approach and the one need that stands out most is CHOICE! You can't have choice if there aren't any appropriate leveled books for the student's to choose from.

I work at a Title 1 school where most of my student's come from economically disadvantaged homes.

I have 16 students that have been working hard learning a new way to explore Reading and Writing in a workshop setting. They are bright, eager, and always looking for ways to increase their learning. Unfortunately many of my students are not able to afford the tools needed to meet these needs and that is where I need to make sure I am providing every opportunity for each student to have access to resources that will inspire, encourage, and create young readers and writers.

My Project

I am requesting a leveled book library system to help inspire choice in reading and to provide mentor texts to encourage these beginning "authors." Skills are taught everyday in my reading workshop, Reading for meaning is primary, and having so many leveled books for my students to access would be a great way for them to immerse themselves in reading. I strongly believe that when children spend more time reading, they become better readers. With a little guidance and encouragement from a teacher who loves to read, students can learn to select appropriate books and discover joy in reading and writing. done

This project is so important because Reading Workshop is a powerful way to structure your reading class.

Using this model involves encouraging your students to choose their own books as well as providing significant amounts of time for them to read independently. By allowing your students to choose their own books, you can foster a love of reading that will last a lifetime.
