This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day, children are surrounded by news about the world around them. Learning about current events and issues in our communities is important, but newspapers are written at a reading level far beyond that of a first grader. But that doesn't mean students shouldn't have access to that information!

Each day I have the privilege of working with 30 first grade students eager to learn about and explore the world around them.

Our school is located in an impoverished community in urban Illinois. Over half of my students are English Language Learners, and all of my students receive free lunch. Due to the difficult economic situation in this area, few students have exposure to life outside the immediate neighborhood they live in. Books, magazines, and other sources of information are a window to the world outside the school's neighborhood, and my students enthusiastically pore over all the nonfiction texts they can find.

My Project

How can you provide an opportunity for my young students to learn about the world around them? By donating a class set of subscriptions to Time for Kids! Each subscription provides three issues plus a mini-book every month. These issues and mini-books feature current events, as well as science and social studies topics of interest to first graders. Each issue has full-color photographs and nonfiction text features, and focuses on reading comprehension skills key for future academic success. In addition to being a great tool for teaching reading strategies in the classroom, a class set of subscriptions to Time for Kids enables the students to take home their magazines and share them with family members. Very few of my students have books or magazines of their own, so a weekly magazine to call their own is sure to be a prized possession for all of my students. Reading these magazines at home will in turn build a passion for reading and improve family literacy.

Your donation of Time for Kids subscriptions will open the door to the world around my young students.

Each child will have the opportunity to learn about other people and places, while also reinforcing comprehension skills. Putting high-quality, appropriate magazines in the hands of children will help build curiosity, passion for reading, and family interactions with texts. By investing in these students, you will help build a foundation for lifelong learning.
