My Project

This year I am switching from 6th grade science to 7th grade social studies. The books selected for this project will help my students gain a greater insight into historical events and topics explored in 7th grade social studies. For most students, social studies can be a total bore. However, I've found social studies can become a favorite when students are immersed in the topic and able to see perspectives they can relate to.

For example, one of the books on the list, When Stars are Scattered, falls in line with a 7th grade standard about the standard of living and value of education in Kenya.

When Stars are Scattered will give students a "peer-to-peer" understanding of the hardships in a Kenyan refugee camp as the main character is around the age of a 7th grade student.

By bringing these graphic novels into my classroom, not only will students have the chance to gain new perspectives of the world around them but also fall in love with reading.
