My Students

Imagine being in a school with no daily announcements and no way to share upcoming events or student accomplishments. Plus, budget cuts are keeping us from printing a newspaper, which costs $280 each month. We want to print our own master news pages and post them around school instead.

My students attend a new inner-city school which was opened with zero student body funds.

Student body funds are typically used for student activities like achievement awards ceremonies, dances, school attire, putting on student fairs and for newspapers. It has been very challenging to raise money when you have no money to start with. Without student body funds there is no newspaper for our school and extra curricular events and awards are limited. Students are not receiving enough information about upcoming events that do happen, and the only way to recognize student achievement is on the webpage--but with only one computer per room for the teacher, students never really see the website. My class wants to change this. In our second year as a school they want a chance to bring the news to the student body and a trial run of our plan to post articles around the school shows it can work.

My Project

We are requesting a tabloid size (11x17) color printer that would enable us to print full size pages for our newspaper which the students will design in Adobe InDesign. We will then post the papers around campus for students and parents to read. This printer will enable students to publish their work for an audience, in a profession format that they can be proud of--rather than the cut and paste version you can see in our class photo. Being able to publish our work will also help them learn to follow deadlines and to take care in their writing, as it will be viewed by a public audience.

Since no one was reading our work on the webpage, this year we began posting our articles on bulletin boards around the school.

One morning, on the way to my room, I saw a girl reading the volleyball article. She was so excited to see herself mentioned and to see her photo posted, that she whipped out her cell phone to take a picture of the posted article. Without a chance to publish the news, students like this, who should be recognized for their achievements will go unnoticed.
