My Students

My school is in a low socioeconomic area of the city. We are a Title I school meaning that most students qualify for free or reduced lunch subsidized by the federal government. Many students are dropped off at school around 7:30 am and some aren't picked up until 6 pm. Many of the families are from other countries and English is not their primary language.

My students are Gifted or high achieving and are very curious.

They are eager to learn new things. It is essential for me to keep them engaged and interested in learning.

My Project

This year is a big year with many exciting events happening around the world. The Olympics and The Presidential Election are just two of these events. Having a subscription to Scholastic News will allow me to help students connect to the world around them. Teaching students about what is "out" there can lead to further self investigation of a topic of interest.

How will this subscription help my students?

Scholastic News is a novel way of learning how to read and understand expository text. It allows me to differentiate for my students. It is not the same old textbook stories to read. The articles are interesting. It is another resource to help me teach the Common Core State Standards.
