My Students

Benjamin Franklin once said "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and remember. Involve me and I learn."

Students need to be involved in their learning so that they can take ownership of what they are doing.

Through this project, students will be able to get their hands "dirty" by using them to research and create.I teach 22 eager, energetic third grade students in my classroom this year.

We are a Title I school with 100% participation in the reduce price/free lunch program. Many of our students have never left our community and experienced anything outside of the area. All of our students are eager to learn and need experiences that they do not get at home.

By the end of the school year, I hope to see my students grow 3 or more reading levels. The Read to Achieve Law in North Carolina states that in order to meet reading proficiency and be able to go to fourth grade, students must be at least a reading level P or meet another designated "pathway."

My Project

Scholastic News will allow for my students to experience reading in new and exciting ways. My students will make active connections to current events while increasing their understanding and interest in reading. Each student will be extremely excited to have their very own copy of a magazine to read!

Students in third grade can have difficulties with the transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn".

A major component in the third grade curriculum is showing full comprehension of a text by answering written response questions . My students will use Scholastic News as a tool to build both reading and writing fluency, as well as, reading comprehension. Non-fiction text like Scholastic News, Geography Spin and Science Spin include engaging articles and extended learning opportunities making this a great resource both inside and outside the classroom. Your donations will allow for my students to have added exposure to news articles, current events, and other engaging tools and resources!
