Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love reading non-fiction text but it's hard to find text at their levels. This proposal will fulfill that need.

I have 24 students in my class.

16 of them are English Language Learners and the majority are on free or reduced lunch. My students are from a Title One school. Many of them come from economically disadvantaged circumstances. Even though they face economic challenges, they come to school each day eager to learn new things.

My Project

This proposal will allow every child in my class to have their very own journal to practice writing daily. I also have asked for a word family book set. This will help reinforce the phonics concepts that I'm teaching in class. The last kit that I'm requesting is a kinder and 1st grade set of Non-Fiction Newsstand Readers. These readers are filled with high-interest magazine like text which allow my young 1st graders to enjoy non-fiction topics at their level. There are 4 copies of 6 different magazines in each kit. This will allow me to work in small groups, or the kids can partner up or work individually.

Extra!

Extra! This project will help my students feel like "big kids" by reading magazines that are written at their level. The word family books will reinforce phonics skills and they can then write in their journal about the non fiction topic they just read about.
