My Students

"Discouraging an enthusiasm can be just another way of dismantling a strategy that helps a child with autism feel better regulated-or worse, removing a source of interest and joy. A more helpful approach is to: use the enthusiasm as a way to expand the child's outlook and improve the child's life."

Our classroom is comprised of 6 teenagers with moderate to severe disabilities.

Every student in our class has been diagnosed with autism, due to this, our students struggle with generalizing academic skills. My student's communication skills range from completely non-verbal, to limited verbal abilities. Even with their difficulty with expressing themselves, these teens have shown myself, and their parents the desire they have to become successful students. Our school is a specialized public school in Staten Island, New York dedicated exclusively to teaching special needs children. The materials requested will not only benefit my current class, but some materials such as the Close Reading Reproducibles will benefit any group of students I may have the privilege of teaching in the future.

My Project

The literacy related workbooks that I've requested, such as Common Core: Daily Language Practice, Daily Language Practice Journal, Writing Prompts Journal will provide my learners with the daily practice they need in order to both understand and generalize basic academic skills. Literacy skills such as decoding words, and creative writing are difficult for my students. If given the daily practice with these journals, my students can truly reach for the stars! I've also requested mathematics related workbooks, such as Common Core: Daily Math Practice, and Math Strategies Practice Journal which will provide my students with the visual modeling the need, and encourage multiple mathematical strategies in order to complete problem solving. Strategies included are: using a number line, ten frame addition/subtraction, and 100's chart.

My teenage learners with autism deserve the opportunity to have the resources necessary to practice, and reinforce basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills in both the classroom, and at home.

The materials requested will become the motivating tools I need to both teach and reinforce the skills my students are encouraged to master.
