Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Teaching is a craft that requires a fine balance between creativity and academic rigor. For any successful classroom teacher, finding this balance is a difficult process which takes time, effort and a lot of preparation. Yet, for a teacher of gifted and talented students, there must be extra strides taken to ensure all students are being exposed to material that will extend their individual talent. I was given the role as the gifted and talented teacher in my Bronx school this year, and am extremely lucky to be teaching such bright, eager, wonderful children. However, my school was not prepared to meet the needs of these students. As a former student in a gifted program in New York City, I was prepared to offer my students the same caliber of education . Yet, as I began the year, I realized the school was in no position to give my students the quality many other gifted and talented programs offer. My first thoughts to get these children to integrate their learning and enrich the current curriculum was to expose them to elements of photography. Through combining elements of photography as well as using the medium to explore the other content areas, my students will be able to extend their thinking. My vision of using cameras in the classroom was instantaneously comprehensive; taking picture of their families for social studies would link to our writing unit on small moments. Our nonfiction reading study would be a great connection to our science study of insects, where my students could snap pictures of insects they find. Our world study would be complete with their interpretations of culture through their photographs taken on our neighborhood walks. With this generous gift, my students will truly experience the enriched curriculum they deserve.
