This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Expression is every child's right. As an Art teacher, I have found inspiration in helping my students learn more than just how to pick up a pencil, crayon, or brush and mark a page. I have had the pleasure of watching them learn how to use those tools, and share their creative thoughts.

Over the years I have taught students from Pre-K through 5th grade.

The one thing that keeps every day interesting is how each child, in each grade, at one point or another "gets it." Then they move forward creating art projects (at times trepidatiously), to express and share what they've learned. My 5th grade students are offered the biggest projects in hopes of getting them ready for the reports and presentations they will have in middle and high school. Book reports are fine, but with a presentation about any given subject where the student creates a brochure, clay or paper mache sculptures stand out with creative verve! Basics like paper, pencils, crayons and markers are still the staple items to inspire the imagination.

My Project

The materials I've requested will provide opportunities for my students to try their hand at a couple of new projects. A book project will allow them to hone their abilities in illustration skills, book creation, and binding. The sets of sketch markers and sharpies will allow students to create with details and expose them to color options in the planning and rough draft stages. This will assist their approach to presenting their ideas and help push their ideas further. Every year I have the 5th graders create a project that spans the across the final grading period. They will create their own planet, a vacation resort, and a type of hand-held device that will change the future. They will also create a project incorporating 2-dimensional creativity in a 3-dimensional presentation. The requested paper will be the canvas showcasing not just the drawing or scribbling of ideas, but also used as they create brochures and book lay-outs.

I service the entire school and I can tell you that being creative isn't as easy as some think.

Artistic skill can be learned, it's not just innate. The broad impact? In years past I have had even my most "artistically-challenged" students return thanking me for the final project that helped them think beyond a simple essay. Begrudgingly at first, but they still remember the processes and time they took figuring out what they wanted to say, how they wanted to say it, and most importantly how they wanted to share their thoughts.
