Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over the years, I have observed that one of the biggest challenges for middle school students to express their emotions and relate to one another regarding shared emotions, empathy, and compassion is the initial verbalization of emotions. This project seeks to use technology to break the ice and move past the initial roadblock by providing each student with a smart LED light that will be used to express their emotional state during our exploration of emotions, empathy, and compassion.
This project will allow students to express themselves using a color emotion wheel, to visually see how other students are feeling, and give them the tools and resources to help their peers in need.
Students will be guided through appropriate ways to address when they recognize others are feeling negative emotions, as well as appropriate ways to show and communicate their own needs when they are experiencing negative emotions.
With the help of these resources and activities, when students see that someone is feeling down, students will be given the tools and resources to show compassion, empathy, understanding to support and uplift those classmates. For example, in addition to card-making/ writing that we already have, students will be able to gift snack passes to their peers who are feeling low.
Generally, success will be measured through class discussions about emotions, compassion, and empathy, through Social Emotional Learning activities and assignments. Specifically, I will be addressing two of California’s T-SEL standards:
1.B.3. Students examine and reflect on the underlying causes of emotions.
3.B.3. Students respond compassionately to others’ experiences and demonstrate care and concern.
At the end of the project, students will complete writing reflections on their experiences using the smart lights, and in response to the two identified California T-SEL standards.
