My Students

James Truslow Adams said, "There are obviously two educations. One should teach us how to make a living and the other how to live." Students in our 5th Dimension classroom are livers of life! Help us share our experience through art in our classroom, as we have no art program at our school.

Our "Fifth Dimension" (fifth grade) classroom is a group of amazingly creative minds.

We are not satisfied to keep our knowledge and learning inside but want to share it with others. One way we share is through artistic representation of our ideas. Unfortunately, we have no art program at our school to help develop and practice technique. We are a low income, Title I school, and funds typically go towards more academic needs rather than art education.

My Project

This project will expand a previous Donors Choose project (watercolor supplies) by adding different media to our lessons and choices. I have requested enough pastel sets and pastel paper for each student in my class to share in twos. I have also requested three instructional books to guide my lessons to these wonderfully creative minds. By integrating art into the classroom, we can connect complex ideas through visual symbolism while developing technique as well.

While I do integrate art as much as I can into our lessons, the introduction of a new art medium with technique tips will take the students in a much different direction than colored pencils or magazine collage media.

Who knows? Someone could become the next Jean Baptiste Chardin, Edgar Degas, or Mary Cassatt! Even if none of them achieve this sort of fame, it will not be because of the lack of exposure and opportunity. Thank you for supporting the arts in public education.
